Why is Lombard Street so crooked and flower- laden?
Who knew the beignets on Fisherman's Wharf would rival those found in NOLA??
We were tickled to watch a training swim for the 24th annual Alcatraz "Escape the Rock" 1.5 miles swim contest that will happen in a few weeks. Imagine going against the current in 58 degree water for that long? We got to share a bit of a walk with some of the swimmers after they exited the water.
A visit to the U.S.S. Pampanito made us VERY glad we never had to serve in a diesel submarine and prompted me to call little brother Bill to tell him that now I have seen an actual one, I am stunned he wasn't claustrophobic!
After we admired the lumber carrying schooner, I tried the pulley system sample! And learned first-hand how heavy lines and sails must have been back in the day before powered winches!
We looked down and realized we were standing on part of the infamous Barbary Coast! Tried to snag a picture but the crowds were too much! So, I borrowed this one: During a final stroll along the Embarcadero, guess who came looking for Dory and Nemo?? Of course, he could have been seeking one of my French fries or a hunk of Barbara's sourdough bread bowl?!!
