Minute Man Country

Today was a road trip combined with walking, though not as much as yesterday. We picked up the rental car with no problem; a 7 passenger mini-van is not as large as I expected and very comfortable. (FB was totally right to use one for our Western States trip a few years ago.) Barbara navigated the Sumner Tunnel like a BeanTown commuter and we hit 93 and proceeded without note to Lexington.

Colonel Parker was right where I left him when we last parted in 1967! the good things never change. This time I read the signs and monument labels with an eye to history and what it means.  We each got a little shivery about walking in the very place where our country began. I don't remember ever reading the inscription on the 1799 monument, but what a punch it packed today. Words to take to heart!
We were disappointed to discover the trolley was not in service until after Memorial Day  and many of the historic places were not open yet, either, so we walked. After lunch at Panera, we headed up the Battlefield Road (2A) to Concord and the Minute Man National Park.

At the North Bridge section of the park, we got a small tour of the Butterick mansion and were encouraged to wander the glorious gardens down to the river and the bridge. Neither of us could idenitfy this wonderful tree. (I hope Jean recognizes it.)

My image of the "bridge that arched the flood" really appeals to me. (I may actually print it.) Leaving Concord we decided we did not want to drive 95 so we meandered "through every Middlesex village and farm" along route 62 until we arrived at our hotel...which to my amazement is right behind Liberty Tree Mall. Nothing looks like I remember. We meant to drive around Danvers this evening, but I fell asleep. Sigh - more than 17,00 steps yesterday and nearly 9,000 today - no wonder I'm kind of pooped. The weather's been glorious, praying for more of the same as tomorrow we tour Salem.
